No matter if it’s long or short, curly or straight – shiny hair has always been a head-turner. Keep in mind that hair shine is not necessarily an indicator of healthy hair, and that you need to take care of it both externally (applying right products and sticking to beauty routines), and internally (optimal water intake and healthy dieting). Here are five different tips you can try out to increase hair shine.
1. Eat properly and drink plenty of water
Vitamins B and C (i.e. Biotin and Niacin) are crucial for a natural hair shine, so make sure you consume the right kinds of food. Vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits, but there are many other highly rated sources of it, too. Great sources of biotin include meat, eggs, milk, whole grains, nuts, and legumes. Niacin can be found in chicken, turkey, mushrooms, peanuts, coffee, etc. If you cannot seem to balance out your nutrition, consider taking vitamin supplements. Also, try increasing your water intake by drinking healthy teas. Natural herbal teas contain polyphenols, vitamins C and E – all the things that are helpful for achieving the glossy hair look.
2. Hair masks and deep conditioning
Try different DIY hair masks. They’re great when you have time on your hands, since it is advisable to let all the ingredients really soak in. If you don’t have the time during the day, wear a hair mask overnight. You can use a regular shower cap to avoid dripping and ensure the heat opens up the hair cuticle. That way, all the natural nutrients will be absorbed. We recommend you to try the beautifully scented natural oils that will increase shine (e.g. coconut, chamomile, and lavender). The combination of eggs, olive oil and honey is also a great choice.
3. Rinse out with cold water or natural remedies
Cold water rinsing is definitely the way to go for shiny and healthy hair, even if it’s just for 30 seconds at the end. Hot showers are great at the beginning, because the heat allows your shampoo and conditioner to penetrate the cuticle. However, too much heat causes the hair cuticle to break, which disables it to reflect the light, and results in a dull look. Cold water will close up the cuticle and seal the moisture inside. If you want, you can also try rinsing with natural remedies. Beer is great for glossy hair: simply rinse your hair out after shampooing (from the roots to the bottom), massage your scalp and then rinse out with cold water.
4. Choose alcohol-free products
Stay away from shampoos that contain alcohol, sulfates, synthetic perfume and colors, as they can dry your hair out or cause damage. The key is to find a mild shampoo that will really cleanse the hair and preserve its natural oils. There are great products for healthy, shiny hair for reasonable prices, such as new Nioxon hair products with balanced formula and natural ingredients (e.g. extracts of saw palmetto and nettle). These products are formulated for thin hair and they ensure hair density and amplified hair texture, making your hair look glossy and beautiful.
5. Stay away from heating tools
Moderation is everything, so make sure you give your hair a break from straightening or curling. Let it air dry or blow it with cool air. There are ways you can have your desired look without using heat.
For glossy hair, eat well, mind your water intake and use these simple tricks. Skip the products with heavy chemicals, since they usually cause instant shine, but don’t really provide your hair with much-needed nutrients. Turn to the healthier alternative and go for products enriched with natural ingredients.
